Case Study - Disability Sport Wales
Inclusive accreditation toolkit for Welsh sport
Disability Sport Wales (DSW) champions inclusive sport and physical activity programmes across Wales. Their network spans hundreds of sports clubs, National Governing Bodies (NGBs), and Local Authorities who all require a consistent way to showcase how they enable disabled people to access high-quality opportunities.
The project brief asked us to replace DSW's legacy toolkit with a modern platform that could be trusted by partners. The new system needed to migrate historical evidence, guide organisations through inclusion pathways, and provide real-time insight into compliance activity across Wales.
- Supports clubs, NGBs, Local Authorities and other partners with tailored pathways.
- Multi-lingual (English/Welsh) interface with strong accessibility defaults.
- MFA-secured access layered on AWS infrastructure.
Toolkit delivered with bilingual UX, WCAG-aligned styling, and AWS resilience.
Challenge
Build a unified toolkit that modernises DSW's existing processes while empowering every delivery partner to own their journey toward inclusive sport and physical activity.
- Take the existing evidence-management system and migrate every record into a newly designed platform.
- Allow programme managers to configure initiatives that drive inclusive practice across Wales.
- Enable staff to add/manage organisations, assign case or lead officers, and coordinate panel members for reviews.
- Guide organisations through pathways where objectives/aims unlock Ribbon, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and bespoke awards.
- Guarantee multi-language support (English and Welsh) plus accessible colour palettes and typographic scales.
- Introduce secure sign-in with multi-factor authentication while keeping onboarding straightforward.
Solution
We delivered a bespoke Angular and AWS solution that respects DSW's mission for inclusivity and operational rigour.
- Bespoke data conversion pipelines interpreted legacy schemas, normalised historical outcomes, and seeded the new toolkit so every partner retained its progress history.
- AWS-hosted Angular application backed by Cognito, Aurora Serverless, and CloudFront CDN for rapid, secure access from community centres to national offices.
- Programme, pathway, and organisation management modules with drag-and-drop objectives, officer assignments, and workflow states for panel reviews.
- Dual-language content system with accessibility controls (contrast presets, type scale preferences) embedded at a design-system level.
- MFA-ready authentication plus fine-grained roles so case officers, panel chairs, and DSW admins only see the tools relevant to their responsibilities.
Toolkit highlights
- Partner facing journeys: Pathway wizard that collects evidence, links to templates, and highlights outstanding objectives before submission.
- Programme governance: Dashboards showing programme health, outstanding actions, and award trends so DSW can target support where it matters most.
- Panel workflows: Assign panel members, capture review notes, and issue conditional feedback in a single screen to speed up accreditation cycles.
- Insight for authorities: Exportable reports filtered by county, impairment profile, or award level to brief partners.
"This system enables our partners to upload and store relevant materials within a central platform, allowing them to effectively showcase their inclusive sport and physical activity journey from Ribbon to Gold. In addition, partners can contextualise their progress through the use of narrative sections. External panel members are then able to review these journeys in advance of partner presentations to the insport panel. Overall, the system promotes transparency and consistency throughout the process. "

Application previews
Early user testing reused familiar workflows from the legacy application while showcasing the refreshed, bilingual UI. These sample screens highlight the accreditation journey, reporting dashboards, and community programme views.
Delivery approach
- Discovery with clubs, NGBs, and Local Authorities to map priority workflows and accessibility needs.
- Bespoke data conversion sprints that reconciled award history, objective evidence, and officer assignments.
- Design system definition covering bilingual typography, contrast modes, and accessible component states.
- Incremental Angular releases into AWS environments with automated MFA/Cognito policies baked in.
- Coaching sessions so DSW officers could configure programmes, manage panels, and support onboarding.
Outcomes
DSW staff now run national inclusion programmes from a single interface where every organisation's progress is transparent. Clubs gain clarity on what is required to reach each award tier, and panel decisions are auditable.
The AWS foundation keeps performance consistent, while the bilingual UX and accessibility controls ensure the toolkit embodies the inclusivity principles DSW champion.
- Legacy records migrated with zero loss of historical accreditation status.
- Programmes, pathways, and objectives can be reconfigured without development work.
- MFA-protected accounts reduce security risk without burdening community volunteers.
